Utterly enchanting Mail on Sunday

For years I've been a
huge Jojo Moyes fan. It's such a great narrative about personal strength and really captures how books bring communities together, especially for these women who are completely bonded by their love of literature ― Reese Witherspoon

A
genuinely entertaining book that's a perfect gift for people who need some escape from the everyday and just want to be absorbed in a really cracking story. Set in rural America in the 1930s, it's got a band of feisty characters who are funny and sweet with contemporary resonances to boot ― The best books to give this Christmas, Stylist

What a
wonderful novel. The Giver of Stars is the most sweeping, dramatic, richly evocative book, full of brilliantly feisty women. I whipped through the pages, utterly agog, pretty much feeling as though I was on a horse in 1930s Kentucky myself ― Sophie Kinsella

HER BEST NOVEL YETThe Times

With
characters so real they feel like dear friends and a compelling storyline, this is a beautiful, special novel. I loved it and didn't want it to end!Liane Moriarty

EpicDavid Nicholls, bestselling author of One Day

An entertaining, immersive and moving read. The Giver of Stars is rip-roaring popular fiction . . . but it is also a novel that celebrates education, intellectual curiosity and, above all, books and the knowledge, comfort, company and power that they can bring. Moyes shines a light on a historic footnote to pay tribute to women's work, endurance and female solidarity ― The Sunday Times

Timeless, Jojo Moyes' greatest work yet, and one of the most exquisitely-written - and absolutely compulsory - novels about women ever told. Brilliant and perfect and will remind you of why you read; even of why you breatheLisa Taddeo, bestselling author of Three Women

Quatrième de couverture

England, late 1930s, and Alice Wright - restless, stifled - makes an impulsive decision to marry wealthy American Bennett van Cleve and leave her home and family behind. But stuffy, disapproving Baileyville, Kentucky, where her husband favours work over his wife, and is dominated by his overbearing father, is not the adventure - or the escape - that she hoped for. That is, until she meets Margery O'Hare - daughter of a notorious felon and a troublesome woman the town wishes to forget. Margery's on a mission to spread the wonder of books and reading to the poor and lost - and she needs Alice's help. Trekking alone under big open skies, through wild mountain forests, Alice, Margery and their fellow sisters of the trail discover freedom, friendship - and a life to call their own. But when Baileyville turns against them, will their belief in one another - and the power of the written word - be enough to save them?

This book is just so absolutely wonderful, her best so far. It's so good that when the book finishes you feel like you are actually saying goodbye to real people when, in fact, you just want to carry on with them. A very moving story that's beautifully told; best book I've read in a long time.

4 1/2-5 star read. JoJo Moyes writes great novels and this is one of her best. It's a departure from her previous books but was a really interesting book. Alice is an English girl who married a wealthy American in a whirlwind romance. Taken to rural Kentucky where her father-in-law owns a mine, she is lost and despairing as her husband rejects her and her father-in-law makes her life unbearable. She decides to join the women of the packhorse library and finds some meaning in her life. When something terrible happens, she leaves her home and husband and moves in with a friend from the library. Her father-in-law becomes vengeful. The book is not only informative about a piece of history but also what it was like for women in rural areas like the mountains of Kentucky and how brutal their life was. But it introduces us to some really wonderful women who I enjoyed getting to know as I read this book. Another wonderful Moyes book.

This book has been in my kindle library for some time. I absolutely do not know why I did not read it before. This felt like more like an experience. At times it reminded me of Kristin Hannah’s work. This story is set in 1930’s rural America.

This is about a British woman Alice who is from a well to do stiff upper lip family in England but, she never quite fits in as she was always in trouble and not behaving quite like the Lady they expected her to be. By way of escape she finds herself attracted to an American man. She leaves for America and is all excited. She thinks it will be a bed of roses but, the rose tinted spectacles soon come off when reality does not match the fantasy.

She cannot go back to England because her parents think she has made her bed so she must lie in it.

Her husband’s father is a pig, and her husband appears to be afraid of him. But Alice wants more as there is no passion and she is unable to relax in their home. Those days the women were supposed to put up and ‘know their place’

When opportunity arises for her to join a travelling library of women delivering books to those who are less fortunate, she goes against the wishes of her husband and father in law and she jumps at the chance.

The leader is Margery O’Hare, she is a strong woman who does not care what any of the townsfolk think of her. But, Alice admires her. The women are expected to use horses as there are many parts that cannot be accessed by vehicles.

Now we see how Alice grows into herself and the cost she pays for standing up to her father in law. We also see how she discovers the meaning of love and how she observes others.

There is a suspicious death and one voice is leading the pack against Margery. But the women of the travelling library grow into a unit of 5 despite many of the townsfolk rallying against them. Each of the women’s lives are forever changed.

The ending for me is satisfying to say the least.

I did not realise that the travelling library was actually something that really happened between 1935 and 1943.

I must also add that the audio addition is well worth it as I could read along with my kindle and have the wonderful Julia Whelan’s narration in the background. She just added to the experience for me.
